Retirees Plan



While career employee members of the American Postal Workers Union are eligible for all benefits offered by the Voluntary Benefits Plan while they are actively at work, some benefit programs are available to retirees.

There are two categories of benefits available to retirees: (a) benefits that must be purchased prior to retirement but may be continued after retirement provided the member continues his/her APWU membership, and (b) benefits that may be purchased after the retirement provided the member continues his/her APWU membership. Benefit programs that may be continued after retirement (if purchased prior to retirement)

  • Term Life Insurance
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment (to age 80 - reduced benefit limits)
  • APWU MasterCard
  • APWU Home Mortgage
  • Pre-paid Group Legal Services
  • Hospital Cash (reduced benefit limits)
  • Dental Plan
  • Nifty Fifty Cents Plan (Term Life portion may be continued)
  • Basic Care (may be continued to age 65)

Benefits programs that may be purchased after retirement

  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment (to age 80 - reduced benefit limits)
  • APWU MasterCard
  • Pre-paid Group Legal Services
  • Hospital Cash
  • Dental Plan
  • Basic Care Plan (may be purchased if under age 60 - continued to age 65)

You may apply for insurance if you do not live in South Dakota or Minnesota.

State Availability
Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage is not available to residents of South Dakota or Minnesota.

Please Note
You must notify the Voluntary Benefits Plan of any address change, employment status change, or life status change (i.e. marriage, divorce or name change). Notice must be in writing.
